In a disturbing resurgence of ethnic violence, suspected Jukun militias launched a pre-dawn assault on Dekeh Village along the Wukari–Kente Road in Taraba State, burning down 15 huts and leaving one resident with serious gunshot wounds.
The attack, which occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, has been confirmed by security sources, who said about six armed men stormed the community, firing sporadically and causing widespread panic. Residents were forced to flee into the surrounding bush to escape the violence.
“They burned food stores and yam seedlings, destroying the means of livelihood for many families,” one source told Zagazola Makama.
The victim, identified as Mdue Saaondo, was quickly evacuated by a joint security team and taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari, where he is receiving medical attention.
Authorities say investigations are underway to identify the attackers and bring them to justice. Plans are also in motion to convene an emergency security meeting with the Wukari Local Government Traditional Council, aiming to mediate the persistent tensions between the Tiv and Jukun communities.
“Enhanced patrols are being carried out to prevent further escalation,” police said in a statement.
The incident adds to a longstanding history of ethnic clashes in Southern Taraba, often linked to disputes over land ownership and territorial claims.
